I’ve been a bad blogger lately. I hope you can forgive me. See, I’ve got a new role at work which involves writing and blogging (yay!) but that does mean that the motivation for writing and blogging in my spare time has waned somewhat. Never fear though, I am back on it and back in the blogging game.
If you’ll allow me a moment of self-indulgence, have you seen my regular column in runABC yet? The new issue is out now – so pick up a copy if you can!
So, back to the point of this post. Food. And me. Food and me.
I’m a bad eater. Always have been really. I regularly got told off as a kid for not finishing meals, and have never had a big appetite. I never realised it was a ‘problem’ until pregnancy, when I struggled to eat enough for me and my growing offspring.
It’s not that I eat ‘badly’ – I eat reasonably healthy, and try to pack the nutrients in where I can (don’t get me wrong, I have a super-sweet tooth as well), but I just don’t eat enough. Those closest to me will often be found encouraging me to ‘just eat a bit more’. Nutrition also proved to be (part of ) my undoing during the London Marathon – my stomach couldn’t cope with digesting food on the run, and that, along with the untimely arrival of my period made for cramp-city,
No matter how hard I try though, I can never eat big meals. Little and often is the key for me and I am constantly snacking, to prevent my blood sugar levels (and mood) falling through the floor. Finding the right snacks is therefore key.
Enter the Go Faster Energy Bites, which I was kindly sent for review. Like most runners, I’ve tried my fair share of energy bites/balls/bits and I think it’s fair to say that not many of them taste of actual food. Hurrah for these though – made of all natural shizz* they’re right up my alley. They’re also gluten free, wheat free, dairy free & two of the flavours are vegan-friendly if that’s your thing.
*The apricot & seed Refuel bar is made from sultanas, dates, apricots, sunflower & pumpkin seeds, linseed, oats and honey.
The ones I’ve had most success with are the pre-run bites (so much so there’s none left to take a photo of. Oops). They’re light yet substantial enough to give me energy, and don’t generate gut-bombs. They taste fab too. Thumbs up.
The apricot Refuel variety are great for long run fuel – nice and small and the dried fruit content is great for energy. Will definitely be giving them a go during my next half-marathon/marathon training cycle.
The best flavour by far though are the hazelnut & chocolate Recovery bites. Perfect for a post-run treat, or an afternoon pick-me-up. i’m a slave to dark chocolate so they won me over instantly.
I was also kindly sent the Go Faster Food Active Family recipe book. As anyone with a four-year old will tell you, they are non-stop so great fuelling is vital. There are three pancake recipes in there, which is enough to sell a book on its own, in my opinion. The Apple Power Pancakes are especially good for getting more fruit into the small one, and we’re looking forward to trying out more of the recipes!
*Full disclaimer. The Go Bites and Go Faster Food recipe book were sent to me in exchange for a review. All thoughts are my own.
